We left some water out in sun to dry and when we came back later we were amazed! Like magic, beautiful salt crystals lined the bottom of the pan were once was water.
We had our ah-ha moment. We knew we had something special on our hands.
Since then we have grown from 1 salt house to 4 salt houses and we plan to build even more!
We still get excited when we see the beautiful crystals form at the bottom of the pan on a warm sunny day.
We decided to take matters into our own hands and make some ourselves. We hopped in the car, went down to the beach, filled a jug with Atlantic sea water, and began experimenting!
First we tried boiling the sea water. We were able to produce the salt we were looking for but we found that it takes a lot of energy to boil the ocean. So we experimented with solar.
Our Salt obsession began when we were looking for a local sea salt to use with the herbs and veggies we were growing in our backyard and we couldn't find any!
We are producing the only solar-dried sea salt in Nova Scotia. We believe in sustainable practices and local food.
Our salt has only one ingredient, Nova Scotia sea salt- no additives! It is a moist unrefined food-grade finishing salt with all of the ocean's trace minerals intact. It is produced by simply allowing the sun to work its magic!
We filter the ocean water and dry it in our salt houses that work like greenhouses by amplifying the sun's heat and allowing the sea water to dry out. That is it!
